A Step-By-Step Guide for How to Make a Flower Arrangement

flower arrangement design

When I’m adding into my arrangement, I’m going to cut the stem to the height that I want and make sure that I’m removing anything off of the stem that may touch the water. Next is filler which is what I like to refer to as the bridge between your foliage and your more prominent focal flowers. You see, there’s an endless number of floral ingredients out there + available, but there’s really only 4 main categories that you have to consider when flower arranging.

White Is Right

The range of styles, which emphasize different elements and forms, fall under the general term ikebana. When you’re finished, step away from the arrangement for a few minutes, then give it a final check. Spin the arrangement around, making sure it looks full and interesting from the front, the back, and the sides. If there are any giant gaps, fill them with whatever material is most suited for that particular place—whether that’s a big blossom, a delicate bloom, a spindly green, or just a simple leaf. You might also try changing the direction of some flowers or shifting the greens and filler flowers, so that they create a better frame for the bigger blooms. You may even want to remove some elements if a particular area seems too crowded or busy.

But all is not lost, because flowers often create the illusion of scent by their very existence. One stark color will stop the eye and keep coming back to it, voiding rhythm whereas a few of the same color throughout the design can create more rhythm and harmony. Just as in dominance, the supporting actors play a vital role in contributing to the whole. Rhythm in floral art may be difficult to see because generally, rhythm is more something we hear in music for example. Consider the movement of a shoal of fish or the flight of a flock of geese and even a group of people dancing.

Mother’s Day Table Setting

I recommend having a pair of garden or floral snips to cut your stems. I really recommend using something more than just regular ole scissors. So today, I thought I’d break out my camera so that I could film this short tutorial (check out video above) where I break down the very basics of flower arranging with you.

A rustic caddy or basket filled with mason jars perfectly sets the scene with sunflowers and seeded eucalyptus greens. This tablescape by The Honeycomb Home adds million bells for a hint of purple contrast, but purple statice works too. Submerged flowers combine with candles to add romance to the table. To keep them in place, wire a fishing weight to the bottom of the stem. Then cover the base with rocks like @odealarose before adding water.

This place setting mixes softer, romantic florals with textural pods and grasses, which lend an earthiness to the arrangement. Garden roses (including Distant Drums and Cappuccino) are incorporated along with sahara spray roses, lisianthus, sumac, millet, and protea pods. Flower arranging is likely something you’ve done before, which shows that there’s a low barrier to entry. Hunt Slonem mixes plants and pots in front of a gallery wall, but even without the art, anyone can put together a swoon-worthy tabletop of plants. It looks elegant but at the same time it’s very reasonably priced so that you can enjoy flowers everyday- not just for those special occasions.

Then, when you go to buy flowers, you know you're picking up colors that work well together. Monochromatic schemes, which show off the variety of different hues of the same color, can be striking. Add smaller flowers and textural elements in the arrangement to fill around the focal flowers. Again, don't place all of the supporting flowers straight up or to the sides. You can think of the shape of the arrangement as a dome, and you need to fill in all angles of that dome for it to look complete.

The best way to arrange flowers is to start with greenery as a base. Eucalyptus, ivy, and fern fronds are good greenery go-tos. Use the stems of the greenery to create an inverted triangular shape. This guarantees your arrangement will have both a horizontal and a vertical presence. Also, be sure to recut stems before adding them to the vase.

Tabia Yapp launched her floral design business, Bia Blooms, in 2020, after years of arranging flowers for friends. “It was a bonkers thing to happen for my business so early on,” says Yapp. There is a word of caution, though, when too much contrast will become jarring and not be pleasing to the eye. To create a balanced and pleasing arrangement, different parts of the arrangement become more important than others.

Here in West Michigan the weather is starting to turn, and we’re enjoying a rather pleasant (albeit early) spring. And honestly, all this sunshine has me itching to get my hands on some fresh blooms. While you can be methodical about your color scheme, there really isn't a way to go wrong when pairing flowers. Moss recommends selecting flowers based on what's currently blooming in your garden or what you can find at the local market. "The key is to be open-minded and see what you are drawn to," she says.

Regardless of the types of flowers or vases you have access to, you’ll be able to create a professional-looking bouquet that will surely impress you and your house guests. Leaves or foliage left on your stems, they’ll start to decay if they’re submerged below the water line which can create bacteria that will reduce the vase life of your flowers. After arriving home with your flowers, you might be tempted to begin arranging right away.

Still, understanding essential design ideas will help elevate your arrangements. Perfect for gifts, centerpieces, decor, and more, we’re showing you how to turn your grocery store bouquet into pure magic.
